The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, IN
March 2004

Sacred Heart is the heart of that most Catholic institution, the University of Notre Dame. The cornerstone was laid on the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August 1847. Modelled on Giacomo Barrozi da Vignola's Chiesa del Gesu in Rome, the church is a combination of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and decoration, 19th century religious symbolism and a medieval love for relics (which seems out of place in the American heartland) and tradition.
