In the vision that inspired the foundation of the church, Rahere was captured by a winged beast and held over a pit, and saved only by the appearance of Bartholomew. It's believed that this center creature, friendly but monstrous, represents that event. He sits in the center of the tomb canopy. Note the decorated lancet arcading, the foliate ornaments on the spires, and the traces of the original paint; as well as the half-billet moulding on the Norman arch.
