The founder of St. Bart's, Rahere, also founded St. Bartholomew's Hospital. The Book of the Foundation says that during a bout with malaria, Rahere had a vision of the apostle Bartholomew, saying that the illness would be cured if Rahere returned to England and built a church and a hospital. He'd been something of a court jester in the retinue of Henry I, so it was quite a career change, but the church and the hospital he founded are still active.
